16 March 2007 Number who would lie to aid insurance 'in the millions'
Around two million Britons on the road would lie in order to protect their car insurance premium, new research has revealed. Some 2.5 million people would lie, subsequently breaking the law, if they knew it would ensure a payout, according to Moneysupermarket.com.
And more than 25 per cent of motorists would lie under pressure, it added.
For example, 18 per cent of drivers would say that their stolen car was locked, even if it wasn't - a trend in statistics called "worrying" by Richard Mason, the managing director of insurance at the company.
"People may not see the omission of certain facts as fraud, but if these facts helped lead to the claim then that's exactly what it is," he said.
Earlier this month, research from Kwik Fit warned drivers that an improperly inflated tyre could see them lose out on a car insurance payout.
