13 March 2007 Older drivers urged to keep insurers informed

Older drivers are being urged to keep their car insurance providers informed of their medical condition.

Speaking to Thisismoney.co.uk David Hoyle of Age Concern warned that veteran motorists with medical problems should let their insurer know of any changes to their health.

"Older people are more likely to develop medical conditions, but they are not always conditions that will affect their ability to drive" he said.

"It is just a matter of informing the DVLA and insurers of those relevant medical conditions," he added.

The chance of having an accident rises by around 13 per cent for drivers aged over 70, according to statistics.

Figures from the Association of British Insurers show that the average claim for drivers over the age of 75 is consequently 50 per cent higher than the average claim for those aged 60 - at £1,716.

A number of insurers reject new applications from drivers over 70.
