09 March 2007 Car registrations fall in February

The number of new cars registered in February has fallen against results from the previous month, car insurance customers may be interested to know.

Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed that there were 2,410 fewer units registered in the month compared to the 73,586 in January.

An increase in the number of eco-conscious drivers may have led to the slight drop in diesel demand the company recorded - a fall to 28,516 reducing its market share to 38.3 per cent, the company added.

However, the number of registrations for the year to date is up by 2.5 per cent on 2006, as 239,189 vehicles have been officially declared in 2007.

"February is traditionally a slow month as new car buyers and the motor industry prepare for the surge that accompanies the March plate change," said SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan.

Meanwhile, police in Scotland have expressed their disappointment at the 330 motorists caught using their phone in Scotland since the new legislation regarding the offence was introduced last week, according to icLanarkshire.co.uk.
