08 March 2007 'Improper stops' may see drivers receive junction box payoffs

Motorists in London punished for stopping in a junction box may be reimbursed their fine, a local news provider states.

The Hornsey & Crouch End Journal reports that drivers unfairly caught stopping in the restricted road areas could follow the lead of Gary Speller, who successfully appealed against his reprimand for the offence.

Mr Speller, 50, of Enfield, received his £50 fine for stopping in a junction box, after he told a local hearing that another motorist had stopped in front of him, leaving him stranded within the lines, it added.

A driving offence can have implications for car insurance customers, but not for Mr Speller in this instance, who also claimed the box was of illegal size.

And the software engineer who assisted him in his case is urging the 211 drivers caught in the same way to appeal.

"They have every right to appeal. I think they would be successful," said Jim Douglas.

Meanwhile, Tesco has issued a public apology to drivers in the south of England following the fuel contamination scare last week.
