08 March 2007 Flood warnings as Avon banks burst
People living in the midlands have been issued flood warnings after the Avon's banks burst in Evesham.Local traffic and business in the area have been disrupted after heavy rain, while fields across Worcestershire are completely underwater, the Worcester News has reported.
If flooding were to reach residential areas, the damage done could have serious implications for home insurance policies.
Despite the Environment Agency raising temporary barriers on Sunday March 4th 2007, the speed of the incident has been claimed to have taken them the organisation by surprise, it added.
Local man and captain of cruise boat the Conway Castle, Eric Sturt, said he believed "the Environment Agency got caught out".
"Between 10:00 and 11:30 GMT on Saturday it came up by six inches."
Last week, a flood in Bolivia was declared a natural disaster.
The event occurred over a series of months, leaving 35 people dead and affecting 72,000 families in the country.
