07 March 2007 Southampton students warned of break-ins
Students in Hampshire have been warned to increase their home security following a series of break-ins in the area which may affect their home insurance policies. The area around Inner Avenue in Southampton, commonly occupied by students, has been targeted by thieves more than 60 times in recent weeks, according to Hampshire News.
In response, local officers from the burglary investigation unit teamed up with crime reduction and community support officers at a road show at Solent University in order to raise awareness of the problem.
"It went really well, the students seem genuinely interested and concerned about the advice and information we were giving out," said local constabulary member Helen Ward.
Ms Ward also added that police have launched a website on which people can register and immobilise their mobile phones if they are stolen.
A similar scheme has been set up in Northamptonshire, where a mobile phone is stolen every 30 seconds, according to the Evening Telegraph.
