06 March 2007 Carbon ceiling 'on the cards'
New proposals to cap the amount of carbon emitted by motorists could see people swapping emission allowances, car insurance customers may be interested to hear. The Telegraph has reported that drivers may be allowed to buy or sell personal carbon allowances if the government can get its carbon trading scheme on the road.
At a speech in Cambridge last night, environment secretary David Miliband commented that the EU should look to introduce a "ceiling" on the amount of CO2 emitted by cars - currently accounting for 60 per cent of all harmful emissions.
"We need to consider whether surface transport could become part of the EU Emissions Trading scheme," he said.
Mr Miliband also claimed that bio-fuel and hybrid electric vehicles would help clean up the current output of the motor car.
Meanwhile, expressandstar.co.uk has reported that the increasing demand for bio-fuel, possibly caused by environmental worries, could lead to an increase in beer prices.
This comes as the production of the fuel has lead to barley prices rising, it added.
