06 March 2007 Heavy rain and wind warning for drivers

Car insurance customers should be aware that rain and strong winds are expected to hit England this week.

The Met Office has forecast winds of up to 70 mph and heavy rain on Tuesday night, coming in from the western parts of the country.

Upland areas of the west will see the most severe conditions, although the Highways Agency is urging all road users to take extra care in their vehicles.

Safety tips issued by the body have suggested that drivers keep a fair distance from cars, motorbikes and vans in front of and behind them, as well as brake gradually in order to avoid skidding.

Similarly, cross winds could pose a threat to drivers not travelling safely, with spray potentially causing further problems.

Last week, the Highways Agency warned drivers of severe wet weather in the south of England, advising drivers to use their headlights in an attempt to increase their visibility.
