06 March 2007 New campaign advises white van men

The road safety organisation Think! has launched a campaign aimed at reducing the amount of accidents involving white van men.

Stress and distraction on the road have been targeted as key contributors to accidents while at work and may be conditions van insurance customers have experienced themselves.

At the launch of the programme, road safety minister Dr Stephen Ladyman commented that 200 serious injuries and fatalities take place while the victims are working.

Additionally, the minister stressed that a person (such as an employer) should not call a motorist if they think they are driving and advised them to hang up if it is suspect they are on the phone.

"Good driving is also safe driving and employers must take responsibility for managing the safety of their staff when out on the road," he said.

Figures from the Department for Transport indicate that 3,201 people died while on the road in 2005.
