05 March 2007 High-tech crackdown results in vehicle seizures

Drivers without car insurance or road tax in the north-west have had their vehicles taken by police using high-tech surveillance machines, a local news provider has reported.

The Freehold, Newbold and Turf Hill areas of Rochdale saw officers in full force - using Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to seize vehicles and issue £80 on-the-spot fines, according to the Rochdale Observer.

ANPR hardware photographs car registration numbers and checks them against a police database for previous offences and the news body has claimed that a previous campaign at a nearby school saw fifteen cars towed away and a further seven fines given out.

"We will continue to use ANPR technology to target offenders and are warning drivers who break the law that they will be prosecuted and their vehicles seized," said Inspector Carol Wright.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that motorists affected by the recent bout of contaminated petrol in the south of England may be able to claim for damages on their car insurance policy.
