02 March 2007 New parking fee 'applies to disabled'

Disabled drivers in Hampshire will have to pay for their parking, it has been reported.

car insurance customers in the region may be interested to know that blue badge holders in the Havant area of the county will become the first disabled people in the country to receive charges, according the Portsmouth News.

And the measure - as well as the council's decision not to throw it out - has been criticised by the county's car insurance customers.

The vice chairman of the Havant Over 50s forum, Ron Martyr, called the decision "ridiculous" and a cause of disgruntlement within the community.

Council leader David Gillett defended the decision, but remarked that he appreciated the concern due to his own circumstances.

"My own wife is disabled… These are issues I can understand… Other councils have approached me and said 'we think you are brave doing that'", he said.

Meanwhile, hundreds of motorists in the Hampshire area are having car trouble after a contaminated supply of petrol was found to be distributed there.
