02 March 2007 Pubs could be made responsible for drink-driving
Licensees may be forced to accept responsibility for drink-driving incidents, car insurance customers may be interested to know. With the possible introduction of random breath-testing looming, the government could call on publicans to give customers incentives in order to discourage the crime, it has emerged.
A road safety review from the Department for Transport has raised the idea and the group will consult on the matter later in the year, a spokesman has commented.
But UK landlords believe the measures could lead to unfair pressure being placed upon them.
"If someone wants to drink and drive, there's often nothing you can do," said Lancashire licensee, Martin Jones.
"You often don't know who is driving, especially during a busy session,” added James Hilton, a Derbyshire landlord.
Meanwhile, it was revealed this week that socialite Paris Hilton has had her driving licence suspended following a drink-driving incident in Los Angles.
