02 March 2007 Video games 'can speed up drivers'

Computer driving games may be responsible for making younger motorists speed and in turn raising car insurance premiums.

The British School of Motoring (BSM) has revealed that more than a third of motorists aged 16 to 24 will drive faster on the road after a gaming session, according to the BBC.

Risk-taking also went up after playing, with 27 per cent admitting more dangerous activity behind the wheel, which may cause an increase in car insurance prices.

And a quarter of the 1,000 respondents have said that they sometimes compare driving to actually being in a video game simulation, something BSM's road safety consultant Robin Cummins took the opportunity to address.

"With more than 200 young people killed each year due to speeding alone, it's crucial that they learn to 'keep it real' on the road."

This isn't the first time an electronic device has been linked to driver inefficiency.

For instance, the government has this week introduced stricter regulations in order to keep people from using their mobile phones while on the road.
