01 March 2007 Insurance body calls for one-year learner plan
Learner drivers should be taught over a one-year period, a body of car insurance providers has claimed. The measure has been suggested by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) in order to save lives on the road.
Speaking to the Common's transport select committee, director of the ABI, Nick Starling, commented that radical action was necessary in order to reduce the number of fatal road accidents - the biggest killer of 15-24 year-olds in the UK, according to the Daily Record.
Mr Starling added that the ABI's plan would give drivers the opportunity to gain more experience behind the wheel.
"Our proposals will better equip young drivers to handle the dangers of driving, so they become safer motorists," he said.
A similar move in Sweden saw a 40 per cent fall in young motorist casualties, car insurance customers may be interested to know.
In 2005, 3,201 people were killed on the road, figures from the Home Office have revealed.
