28 February 2007 Speed cameras 'may be used to catch mobile users'
Motorists could find their car insurance premiums compromised if they are caught using their mobile phones on the road by speed cameras, it has been reported. While the Gatsos are primarily used to detect speeders, a high-ranking police authority has suggested to the Evening Standard that they may be used to catch those flouting laws introduced yesterday.
Under new regulations, drivers can be fined £60 and docked three licence points - something which may seriously affect their motor insurance policy.
And Meredydd Hughes, head of roads policing for the Association of Chief Constables, as well as chief constable of the South Yorkshire constabulary, commented that such a method would be "fair game".
"There is no policy currently to trawl photographic evidence… that is not to say that we can't change [that]," she said.
Meanwhile, it has been reported by the BBC that Scottish police may install cameras to watch cameras, in light of recent attacks on the devices.
