28 February 2007 Toll rise not congestion measure, says council

Toll charge increases have been addressed by council officials in Dartford, car insurance customers in the area may be interested to know.

Government proposals outlining a rise in charges at the Dartford crossing from £1 to £1.50 were originally thought to be congestion-cutting measures, This is Local London has reported.

However, authorities have claimed otherwise, adding that it is not a method to discourage drivers - as there is no alternative for them.

Martin Murphy, ward councillor for Greenhithe agreed with this, but added that congestion was still an issue to be concerned with.

"We have to think about the environment and not put a band aid on a problem which needs a holistic approach," he told the body.

Earlier this month, 1.8 million people signed an online petition against the government's proposed road-pricing scheme.

If the initiative came into effect, motorists would be charged for how much they drive in addition to road tax and car insurance.
