28 February 2007 Motorists still being caught on phone
Some 54 drivers in the north-west were stopped for using their mobile phone on the road yesterday, despite new legislation, a local news provider has reported.Yesterday marked the launch of tweaked sanctions for the offence - motorists will now be fined £60 and docked three licence points, which may seriously affect a car insurance premium.
The police have added that a range of motorists were collared for the offence, from white van drivers, HGV owners and people texting while stationary, according to the Bolton News.
And Sergeant John Brennan of the local constabulary commented that undercover work had led to hostility from offenders, with two people receiving £80 fixed penalty notices, motor insurance customers may be interested to know.
"Quite a few people we pulled over said they would deny the offence until we told them they had been seen by a plain clothes officer," he said.
This week, a spokesperson for Insurancewide.com claimed that a driving conviction could have "huge implications" for car insurance premiums.
