27 February 2007 Government plans 'random breath tests'

Random breathalyser tests may be introduced by the government in order to tackle drink-driving, in news that could see some car insurance policies become compromised.

Consultation on the matter will occur during 2007, along with an evaluation of the current blood-alcohol limit, the BBC has reported.

The Department for Transport has commented that there was a decline in related deaths in 2005 but the amount was still higher than in 1998 and 1999, it added.

And car insurance customers could be concerned to learn that the body's review of the road safety policy has cited tougher policing as the best method to combat the crime.

"Our first priority is to improve the enforcement of the current limit, building on the recent achievements of the police," he said.

Home Office figures from 2005 have revealed that 3,201 deaths occurred on the road in 2005, compared to 3,221 in 2004.
