26 February 2007 Climate change crackdown "vital" for ministers

The mileage accumulated by government officials has been used to criticise their commitment to the environment, in news that may be of interest to car insurance customers.

Whitehall's car and despatch agency clocked up 2,394,200 miles in 2004 to 2005 compared to 2,834,000 in 2005 to 2006, it has been reported.

Accompanying this cost is the wage bill caused by new drivers employed by the company.

Some 210 chauffeurs now work for the agency, an increase from 192 five years ago.

The figures have led Liberal Democrat transport spokesman Alistair Carmichael to comment that it is "vital" that everybody does their bit towards reducing climate change, "the biggest threat our planet faces".

"Government ministers need to start leading by example," he said.

Meanwhile, it was announced today that the government's climate change bill will be downgraded to a draft bill and that any legislation will be delayed until next year, in news that may concern those with car insurance.
