26 February 2007 Road deaths 'cost £8bn each year'
The cost of the 3,000 road deaths to the economy in England each year is close to £8 billion, a new study has claimed. However, the country's road safety record is the third best in Europe, according to findings from the Audit Commission that may be of interest to car insurance customers.
Police data indicates that road accidents have gone down over the past 10 years, although hospital figures have claimed that the amount has remained constant, according to the Guardian.
Some motor insurance customers may agree with the 82 per cent of surveyed motorists who approved of speed cameras and the 43 per cent are in favour of speed humps.
And the news provider added that the report has called such paradoxical views common in drivers.
"The risk of having an accident is the least pressing worry for British motorists; their top concern is traffic, followed closely by financial cost," it said.
Home Office figures have indicated that 3,201 people died on the roads in 2005.
