23 February 2007 Men more dangerous drivers than women, says study
Male drivers are more unsafe than female drivers on the road, in news that may be interest to car insurance customers. Some 97 per cent of dangerous driving offences are picked up by men, while in 2005 a man was 300 per cent more likely to die in a traffic collision than a woman, according to the road safety charity Brake, in conjunction with rescue firm Green Flag - something which may explain any motor insurance gender bias.
And around 84 per cent of motorists underestimate how many accidents are caused by men but over half of those surveyed commented that they believed male drivers are no more dangerous than females on the road, something an expert has called "shocking".
"Drivers know so little about the division between male and female drivers. It is a fact that male drivers are much more likely to cause death on the road and more likely to be killed themselves," said Jools Townsend, head of education at Brake.
Department for Transport figures have revealed that 3,201 people died in road accidents in 2005.
