22 February 2007 Driving instructors: Young not safe after test

In excess of half of the UK's driving instructors think that young drivers are not safe after passing their driving test, a study that may interest young motor insurance customers has revealed.

Some 64 per cent of the 800 teachers questioned by the BBC and the Driving Instructors Association think that safe and competent drivers are not produced by completing the automobile course, according to the Glasgow Evening Times.

Furthermore, the study found that 87 per cent of instructors would welcome a graduated driver licensing scheme, while 74 per cent believe the legal age for driving should be 18.

And Peter Laub, head of road safety for the DIA, commented that the study has increased awareness of important issues, the news provider added.

"This survey highlights the urgent need for fundamental changes to the whole framework of UK driver licensing and the driving test," he said.

Last month, road safety minister Stephen Ladyman commented that a system similar to Sweden's, where students must complete 120 hours worth of lessons, would result in better drivers, the Wessex Scene reported.
