22 February 2007 Scientist is 'car insurance cheat'

A government scientist has been given a suspended sentence after attempting to escape a car insurance claim by giving a motorist fake contact details, it has been reported.

Gary Edward Dunsford, 39, who has recently worked on the bird flu outbreak, tried to trick the driver of the car he crashed into, the police and his motor insurance company, according to the York Press.

The sentence given to Mr Dunsford was nine months in jail, suspended for two years, as well as 150 hours unpaid work and a £1,480 court bill, the news provider added.

Judge Paul Hoffman, recorder for York, commented that he had been dishonest.

"Because you are a hard-working man and because your children depend on you and not because I have any sympathy for you, I am suspending the sentence. It was systematic dishonesty," he said.

Meanwhile, the Insurance Fraud Bureau has reported that successful car insurance scams can see criminals earn up to £30,000, according to the Burnley Citizen.
