21 February 2007 Expert: 112 can see you through on holiday

Few Britons are aware of the changes they are required to implement to their driving in order to stay safe on foreign roads, car insurance customers may be interested to know.

Most people are only aware that in some countries they need to drive on the other side of the road, according to GEM Motoring Assist.

And the group claims that many of those driving abroad do not know that the emergency call number in Europe is 112, not 999.

The company has produced a free guide to driving in Europe, informing drivers that it is an offence - something which may compromise car insurance - to run out of petrol on the motorway in Germany and that carrying a petrol can in a vehicle in Greece is against the law.

David Williams, chief executive of GEM, said that the guide and the use of 112 "could save at least 5,000 lives around Europe every year".

Meanwhile, Home Office statistics have revealed that 3,021 people in the UK died on the roads in 2005.
