21 February 2007 Richmond introduces emissions charges
A London borough has made a commitment against climate change by bringing in parking charges for residents based on carbon emissions, it has been reported. This means that gas-guzzlers in Richmond could pay up to £750 per year to park their car in the area, on top of their road tax and car insurance bills.
And additional researches from Avis Rent a Car has revealed that downsizing to a smaller car could save motorists money as well as help the environment, Easier has reported.
For example, the cost of owning, taxing and buying car insurance for a Range Rover Sport 2.7TDV6 HSE and an annual tube pass is £14,185, compared to a Peugeot 107 Urban five-door with a 1.0 engine and a tube pass, which the group has said will cost half as much.
The company also recommended renting, but only "when required".
According to the World Development Movement, the north-east emits the most carbon dioxide per person in the UK - 13.6 tonnes.
