20 February 2007 Drivers 'could pay £600' for road-pricing box
Motorists may have to pay £600 each in order to assist the government's new road-pricing plans, car insurance customers may be interested to know.Pay-as-you-go road charging would be monitored by the installation of a black box into the vehicle, according to the Department for Transport, the Daily Telegraph has revealed.
This news comes despite 1.5 million people petitioning against the scheme, the body added.
Furthermore, the newspaper claimed that the road-pricing initiative, intended to cut down congestion, will cost £62 billion to implement and £8.6 billion a year to run.
This means that motorists will pick up a bill just to cover collecting the charge - in addition to road tax and car insurance.
Last week, Professor Stuart Cole, director of the Wales Transport Research Centre, claimed the scheme was an idea "that could be useful in London but not in Wales".
"It's too big a hammer to crack too small a nut," he said.
