19 February 2007 'Green-chipping' may help eco-friendly motorists

Drivers are 'green-chipping' their cars in an attempt to be more environmentally friendly, in news that may interest car insurance customers.

Chipping a vehicle is a method in which the parameters of the car, set by the manufacturer, are modified in order to change the output given by the engine, femalefirst.co.uk has reported.

And the body claimed that the engine management system in vehicles hold them back in order for manufacturers to re-package the same engine in newer models - something car insurance customers may want to bear in mind next time their premium is up for renewal.

Furthermore, the organisation has stated that health authorities and van and truck users have chipped their transport fleets in order to increase efficiency and the amount of miles per gallon they get.

It was announced over the weekend that prime minister Tony Blair will be writing to the one million-plus people who have petitioned against the government's road-pricing plan - a scheme that may reduce congestion and carbon emissions.
