16 February 2007 Bi-annual MOT tests could kill

There have been calls for the government to scrap its plans to introduce a bi-yearly MOT test, in news that may interest car insurance customers.

Currently, cars older than three years are required by law to have an MOT test every 12 months, although new legislation could see this limit increased to four years, according to Easier.

But What Car? editor Steve Fowler has commented that this could be misleading to consumers who may see the scheme as a cheaper alternative, when in fact MOT prices will rise due to lack of business at garages.

Furthermore, Mr Fowler suggested that such a move would not help motorists, car insurance customers may be interested to know.

"Although modern cars are more reliable, that shouldn't be confused with safety. This proposal has no safety of financial benefits for any road user," he added.

According to official government statistics, 3,201 people died in road accidents in 2005.
