16 February 2007 Lorry and van drivers 'worst for mobile offences'

Lorry and van drivers are 300 per cent more likely than other road users to be caught using a hand-held mobile phone while driving, according to a police survey which may interest van insurance customers.

Over a period of three weeks, Lothian and Borders Police found one in 22 van and lorry drivers were found to be committing the crime, compared to one in 75 car drivers, the Scotsman has reported.

Now police officers are warning there will be zero tolerance in future, with a high-profile campaign to raise awareness planned as well as drivers being punished for sending and receiving texts messages while in traffic queues, the news provider added.

Under new legislation revealed last month by the Department for Transport, from February 27th anyone caught using their phone while behind the wheel will face a £60 fine and three points on their licence - something which may influence their car or van insurance.
