15 February 2007 Valentine's message spread in young drivers

Sixth form colleges across the country have been targeted in an anti-speed campaign to coincide with Valentine's day.

The For My Girlfriend initiative, led by Suffolk County Council's road safety team, will attempt to bring up the issue of speeding with 17-25 year old drivers - involved in one in five road accidents, according to the EveningStar24.

With car insurance premiums for young drivers sometimes quite high, new motorists may not be able to afford an accident.

In order to spread the message, road safety officers have been giving out Valentine's cards reading: "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to kill you…"

And Sandra Graffham, environment and transport communications manager, commented that some young drivers see their car as a symbol of status, with many rarely thinking about the safety of their passengers.

"Young people think they are indestructible… Young men in particular are usually the ones more attracted to speed," she said.

On February 27th, new punishments will come into effect for those caught using a handhead mobile phone while driving - a £60 fine and three possible license points.
