14 February 2007 Customers may 'pay price for Pimping their Ride'

Motorists who decide to 'Pimp their Ride' do so at the risk of a higher car insurance premium, a price comparison site has reported.

Vehicles with enhanced features and fashionable overhauls could cost an extra 171 per cent to get on to the road, according to Beatthatquote.com.

For example, a rear spoiler can produce a 25 per cent increase in price and darkened windows could mean a 50 per cent rise, the body added.

Bull bars and non-standard alloys account for 30 per cent mark-ups, whereas a full vehicle body-spray led to owners paying a 25 per cent higher car insurance price.

"It's all very well for rock stars to add thousands of pounds worth of extras to their cars, but unless you're on a rock star salary, you could end up spending all your spare cash," Sophie Neary, product director of the site said.

The Home Office has recently launched its Secure your Motor campaign, designed to help drivers keep their vehicles safe.
