13 February 2007 Drivers lacking car insurance 'raise premiums for all'

Police in Gloucestershire are cracking down on drivers without the appropriate tax or car insurance in an effort to make the county's roads safer.

The intelligence-led Operation Jockey, conducted in cooperation with Trading Standards and Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, targeted vehicles suspected to be without the proper documentation.

Twelve drivers will have to produce their tax and motor insurance documentation at a police station, while the police, acting under the Road Traffic Act, also seized two cars.

Commenting on the operation's success, Inspector Stephen Norris said: "This means that two vehicles that were not insured have been taken off the road, making it a safer place.

"We will not tolerate people who use motor vehicles in a dangerous and irresponsible manner.

"It must be remembered that we are all paying higher premiums because of these people," he added.

The initiative comes soon after the Department of Transport revealed that the number of drivers without the proper documentation had almost doubled to over two million in less than two years.

Recent statistics also reveal that drivers without car insurance were involved in accidents which killed hundreds of people in 2005 and are ten times more likely to be involved in hit and run crashes.
