13 February 2007 Police in ice scraper initiative
Police across Bath and East Somerset have been handing out ice scrapers to motorists to remind them of the need to protect their cars against thieves. As part of Operation Relentless, a county-wide effort to drastically reduce car break-ins, the scrapers were given out with advice on how to make their cars more secure and so minimise the need to claim for lost personal goods through motor insurance policies.
Commenting on the initiative, Chief Superintendent John Long said: "During cold mornings, we hope drivers will find the ice scrapers a big help but also remind them of the need to follow simple crime prevention advice to keep their vehicles safe, such as removing property from view inside the vehicle."
Police confirmed that so far 18 arrests have been made and £4000 worth of stolen equipment has been seized under Operation Relentless.
This effort mirrors the current policy of the Sheffield police who are currently distributing crime-prevention packs to motorists throughout the city to crack down on car break-ins.
Car break-ins are among the most common types of crime in the UK, with the amount claimed through car insurance to repair the damage caused often greater than the value of the goods stolen.
