12 February 2007 1 million say 'No' to road tolls
More than one million people have signed a petition against proposed plans to introduce a road-pricing system, the Sun reports. The news provider added that some 1,101,602 signatures were cast on the e-petition on the website for 10 Downing Street, car insurance customers may be interested to know.
The plans, under which vehicles would be tracked to see how much they used the road and then charged in accordance to a road toll system, have been previously criticised by the Association of British Drivers (ABD).
"[They are] unfair, expensive to administer and difficult and inconvenient to collect," said Nigel Humphries of the group.
However, transport secretary Douglas Alexander has commented that the rallying opinion against the proposals would not stop road-pricing trials being commissioned.
The ABD last month strongly urged the government to increase the current motorway speed limit to 80 mph, a speed the body claims is practical in terms of journey times and fuel efficiency.
