12 February 2007 Hands-free 'not risk-free'
Car insurance customers who may be thinking of buying a hands-free kit will be interested to know that it will not protect drivers from accidents on the road, a motor company has warned. Some motorists may have bought the systems thinking it will help them escape the new legislations being brought in on February 27th, in which drivers will be fined £60 and could receive three points on their licence, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) said to Easier.
A driving offence may affect a driver's car insurance policy.
However, the group has commented that hands-free talking while driving is four times more likely to result in an accident and that switching off before setting off is a much safer way to drive.
"If you really can't do that, be prepared to stop and find somewhere legal and convenient to return that missed call or check your messages," IAM chief examiner, Peter Roger told the body.
The Department for Transport announced the new mobile phone legislations in January.
