09 February 2007 Wigan car crime initiative 'a success'

Police officers from Greater Manchester and Lancashire have said that a joint operation to tackle car and house theft has been a success.

Operation Coalition saw police target criminals who drove to the Wigan from other areas to commit car and crime and burglaries.

As well as conducting high-visibility patrols and liaising with the GMP's Tactical Vehicle Crime Unit, officers also used Automated Number Plate Recognition, which resulted in ten arrests, four confiscated vehicles and the recovery of several cars.

Inspector Serena Kennedy, head of Wigan's operational policing unit said: "Some criminals in surrounding counties have a naive belief that they can travel into Wigan and help themselves and this is not the case.

"Through this operation and our partnership working, we now know more about who travels where, when, with whom and what routes [the criminals] like to take."

The operation in Wigan coincides with an operation on the side of Greater Manchester, where Stockport police have been targeting thieves who are breaking into cars and stealing satnavs and laptops.
