08 February 2007 Motorists 'should prepare for cold weather'
The police are advising car insurance customers to ensure their cars are in good working order before setting off on journeys in the current severe weather conditions.According to the Burnley Express, the police also recommend that people should only go out in their vehicles if the journey is an absolute necessity and to check travel updates frequently.
Drivers looking to avoid car insurance claims should also make sure they drive carefully in the inclement weather and a spokesman for a road policing body advises drivers who must go out to make sure they have essential items such as a torch, de-icer and a small spade in case of snowdrifts.
"Warm clothing and suitable footwear is also a must," says Sergeant Martin Bishop from the road policing unit of the Pennine division.
"If the worst happens and drivers are stranded for any length of time it is imperative to try and keep warm."
The spokesman adds that motorists embarking on longer journeys should also look at taking a flask with a hot drink and food provisions with them.
Norwich Union recently stated that the flurry of car insurance and other claims prompted by severe weather conditions tends not to lead to higher premiums as it is balanced out by quieter periods later in the year, reported the Evening Standard.
