08 February 2007 York police in car crime crackdown
North Yorkshire Police Authority has set targets for car crime to be reduced by almost a third by 2010.Representing good news for car insurance customers in the York and Selby areas, police forces have been tasked with cutting the number of car thefts and vehicle break-ins by 30.2 per cent over the next three years.
York has seen a large number of car insurance claims in the past and a former area commander pointed out that the city has a significantly high level of vehicle crime, reports The Press.
Chief superintendent Tim Madgwick, former area commander, added that the rate of car crime in York "hasn't shown huge signs of reduction".
He continued: "It tends to have been a roller-coaster effect where we will reduce it for six or 12 months and then it will increase again."
Police are aiming to reduce the rate of car crime which currently stands at 4,235 incidents every year and improve the detection rate to 30 per cent by 2008.
Car insurance customers were recently warned by security company Retainagroup to reduce the chances of falling victim to car thieves by not leaving vehicles unattended with the engine running to warm up in the cold weather.
