06 February 2007 Rural road-users will be 'hardest hit' by road charging

Rural villages and communities will suffer the most when new road charging plans to battle congestion come to fruition, a road activist body has claimed.

New plans to charge road-users - which will affect car insurance customers - will see those on the most congested highways charged the most, leaving many drivers no alternative but to clog up country lanes instead, the Association of British Drivers (ABD) has argued.

Walkers, cyclists and horse riders should speak out against road-charging now before rural areas become inundated with vehicles, according to Mark McArthur-Christie, the ABD's policy director.

"Unfortunately for villagers and users of quiet country lanes, these will very often be the routes they seek out causing a massive increase in traffic levels," he said.

Last month, the ABD strongly urged the government to increase the current motorway speed limit to 80 mph, a speed the body claims is practical in terms of journey times and fuel efficiency.
