05 February 2007 Drivers warned of 'skin cancer threat'
Motorists who spend a lot of time driving during the summer could be risking skin cancer, a report has claimed. While most windscreens block out harmful UVB rays, they are not keeping UVA out, doctors in St Louis, New Orleans have found.
Their research has found that skin cancers can be directly linked to areas of the body - head, neck and arms, for example - which are exposed to UV radiation.
Now Metro.co.uk. has reported that car companies could be urged to install specially-tinted glass to filter or block out the rays completely, something that may interest car insurance customers.
"If you are driving long distances or sitting in your conservatory every day with the sun beaming in, you are putting yourself at risk," said a spokesperson for Cancer Research UK.
Additionally, Cancer Research UK has reported that non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common type of cancer recorded.
