02 February 2007 Parking cost increase to aid green cause
City councils across the UK could triple parking prices in order to reduce the number of drivers on the road, in news that may be of interest to car insurance customers.Brighton and Hove and Manchester are considering the move, following the lead of Richmond in London, which rubber-stamped the proposal this week, the Telegraph has reported.
In York, city officials have adopted a similar stance, but by cutting the price of parking for more environmentally-friendly cars emitting less carbon, it added.
And Nigel Haselden, Labour cabinet minister for Lambeth, added drivers could pay around £200 for an annual parking permit.
"We want to have an impact on the car ownership regime and to encourage people to think about the car that they drive or whether they need to have a vehicle at all," he said to the news provider.
According to the World Development Movement, the north-east of England produces 13.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide per person each year, the highest amount anywhere in the UK.
