02 February 2007 Road rage affects four-in-five, says watchdog

Around 80 per cent of British drivers are suffering from road rage, new research has indicated.

And with one in three admitting to losing their temper in their car at least once a week, safety campaigners Brake claim road users are dying on the road in response.

The survey of more than 1,000 people by the group found that the vast majority of motorists continue to drive while they are angry - something which may have an effect on car insurance premiums.

Brake's head of education Jools Townsend has admitted that the full extent of road rage is unknown, but said it is a potentially fatal problem.

"Driving requires your full concentration and requires you to be in an appropriate state of mind and if you drive while you're stressed or angry, you're more likely to take risks," said the spokesperson.

Earlier this month, former Indian cricketer and member of parliament Navjot Sidhu is currently battling against a jail term following a fatal road rage attack in a car park in 1988.
