02 February 2007 25% 'don't understand mechanics'

Some forty per cent of road users are more afraid of going to the car repair garage than the dentist, a study has reported.

And one in four fears being taken advantaged of as they do not understand what mechanics are saying to them, according to Direct Line's research.

Of the 2,140 car insurance receivers surveyed by the company, 61 per cent believed they could be overcharged due to failing to know what terms like "hybrid powertrain", "Isofix" and "lift-off oversteer" mean.

However, the work would sometimes be carried out regardless, as 37 per cent said they would agree to the work out of embarrassment and confusion.

"When taking your car to the garage, we'd advise drivers to ask more questions and request a quote broken down by work that needs to be carried out," said Emma Holyer, the organisation's Motor spokesperson.

Meanwhile, statistics from the Department for Transport indicate that automobile owners without motor insurance are ten times more likely to commit a driving offence.
