01 February 2007 Crack down on no-show motorists

Drivers who choose not to turn up for court summonses or pay fines will be detected on the road by a new high-tech system being trialled in Wandsworth, in news that could be of interest to car insurance customers.

Over the next few weeks, bailiffs and court-appointed recovery ages will use state-of-the-art automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems to track down motorists, according to the eGov monitor.

When a car is scanned by an ANPR device, police can see whether its owner has unpaid fines or other outstanding discrepancies.

Planning and transportation councillor Guy Senior said the equipment will help recover money owed to the public purse.

"Motorists who don't pay what they owe should be aware that this number plate reading technology means it is only a matter of time before the authorities catch up with you," he added.

Elsewhere, This Is Local London has reported that a Wandsowrth motorcyclist was killed yesterday after colliding with a car on Garratt Lane.
