01 February 2007 Derbyshire car attacks result in warning
Car insurance customers may be interested to know that crime in the Heanor and Langley Mill area of Derbyshire has led to local police warning motorists to stay alert.Some 16 incidents were reported over 48 hours from January 24th, according to Ripley & Heanor News.
Seven cars were scratched by vandals on Station Road and five cars on Wesley Street the next day, the company has said.
On January 25th a car parked on Beach Road was broken in to - a window was smashed and a handbag was stolen.
Speaking in response to the recent activity, Sergeant Chris Dent of Derbyshire Police reminded drivers of the importance of reducing the risk of car crime.
"Officers are keen to alert residents in the area to be extra vigilant to anyone acting suspiciously near to any vehicle and to make sure people do not leave anything of any value in their cars," he said.
Home Office statistics reveal that vehicle crime has dropped by 51 per cent since 1997, although there were 1.7 million related incidents reported in 2005 to 2006.
