31 January 2007 "Lock up," say Berkshire police

 Burglaries in the Newbury area - which may lead to higher home insurance premiums - have caused police to warn the west Berkshire residents.

The Newbury Weekly News reports that eight break-ins have taken place on Andover Road, Floreat Gardens, Enborne Road and Westgate Road recently.

And now Thames Valley Police have issued tips to in order to reduce the threat of them being targeted in the future.

According to the constabulary, people should make sure doors and windows are locked, valuable items are kept out of the sight of would-be intruders and keys are kept away from places where they could be snatched.

"Burglary leaves many people feeling frightened and violated by knowing that somebody has invaded their privacy. In order to tackle the problem we must all take responsibility," Detective Inspector Kevin Smith told the body.

Conversely, there has been a drop in burglary in Hertfordshire, according to the Welwyn and Hatfield Times.

The fall pays tribute to the "excellent work" of officers and staff in the area, said the constabulary's chief constable, Frank Whiteley.
