31 January 2007 Sutton speeders "beware" when taking taking short cuts
The Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs) of Sutton have combined with Surrey Police in order to prevent speeding in the area's popular short cuts, a local body reports.Town centre rat-runs like Cedar Road and Cavendish Road will be under surveillance from officers using hand-held speed guns and Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology, says icSurreyOnline.
And Sergeant Gerry McLean, the coalition's co-ordinator, claimed the residents of Belmont, Sutton South and Sutton Central identified speeding as a main priority.
However, he also claimed the initiative will catch speeders as well as those on the road without car insurance.
"In many cases when we find vehicles that are uninsured, untaxed and unroadworthy, they are often being used for criminal activities," he told the company.
Last week, figures from the Department for Transport indicated that untaxed drivers have cost the industry £217 million in the last two years.
