30 January 2007 Road Safety Minister to "crack down on irresponsible drivers"
New legislation will continue to lower road death figures in Northern Ireland, the road safety minister has said.Car insurance customers in the area might find it interesting to know that December's figures were the lowest for three years, according to the government.
Of the fatalities that did occur, most were caused by road users speeding, drink or drug driving, not paying proper attention and not using their seatbelts, the official commented.
David Cairns expressed his reassurance at the lower death rate, but added that road users cannot afford to be complacent and that he plans to introduce bigger fines and impose penalty points to irresponsible drivers.
"Almost all road deaths and injuries are preventable. Most are caused by the behaviour of road users," he added.
Figures from the Department for Transport have revealed that 3,201 people died in road accidents in 2005.
