30 January 2007 Speed camera cash grab brings new criticism
As 70 companies in Ireland are lining up to receive a handout of the revenue generated by "big business" speed cameras, a leading campaigner has once again criticised the devices.Being caught speeding on the roads may cause car insurance to receive a fine or points on their license and it was suggested by Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign, that they exist only for commercial interests.
The lobbyist claimed that the installation of the machines to the UK has been a mistake that is making drivers "worse".
"Neither road deaths nor hospitalisations have fallen significantly for a decade and they should have done because engineering safety improvements are much bigger than the growth in traffic," he said.
Meanwhile, the Association of British Drivers has been campaigning to increase the national speed limit on motorways to 80 mph - the optimum level, the body claims, for fuel efficiency and journey times.
