29 January 2007 Weather 'leads to burst pipe claims increase'

The number of burst pipes reported will see an increase in the first quarter of 2007, according to Lloyds TSB.

A report from the company indicated that the average home insurance claim for these incidents is £2,500 to fix the problem, while one claim amounted to £156,000.

In accordance, the group has offered tips to home-owners in order to help them avoid such problems.

Being aware of stopcocks, ball and gas valves will help customers locate difficulties, as will leaving the heating on for a small time every day while on holiday - to avoid frozen pipes, the company revealed.

Furthermore, keeping drain gratings, gutters and down pipes clear of leaves and debris can help, as can insulating taps, lagging pipes and stand pipes.

"To give yourself piece of mind, make sure you have adequate home insurance that will cover you if the icy conditions do take their toll," said Phil Loney, managing director of the body.

Meanwhile, the recent windy weather in the UK has lead to the Highways Agency issuing repeated warnings to the drivers of high-sided vehicles.
